Lawyers and Judges Drug and Alcohol Treatment Program – One of America’s Top Clinics

The rate of addiction in the legal community is higher than in the general public. Alcoholism and substance abuse has destroyed many promising legal and entrepreneurial careers, but it does not have to be this way. Our goal is to have law firms unite against this deadly disease. Attorneys are more significantly susceptible to this disease, which affects everyone in our society. Here are some facts from the LJAP (Lawyers and Judges Assistance Program)
website:

About 10% of the U.S. population has a drug or alcohol problem. For attorneys, it is as high as 18%.

About 8% of the U.S. population suffers from depression. For attorneys, it is as high as 24%

According to a recent report of the ABA, studies indicate that more than 50 percent of all disciplinary cases involve impaired lawyers. The incidence of malpractice insurance claims is significantly higher among impaired attorneys. Lawyers suffering from alcoholism, drug addiction, or depression often deny that they have a problem.

A National Helpline for Judges Helping Judges at 800-219-6474

Judges who need assistance because of alcoholism, substance abuse, addiction or mental health issues may reach other judges, who are in recovery or who have gone through treatment, by calling a helpline sponsored by the American Bar Association. Judges who have volunteered to be a personal resource to other judges throughout the US and Canada are uniquely positioned to share their experiences, strengths and hope.

Both judges in need of help and those interested in serving as a peer-to-peer volunteer should call 800-219-6474 during business hours Central time. All information is confidential and protected by statute.

The National Judges’ Assistance Helpline is a service of the ABA Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs Judicial Assistance Initiative and administered by the Texas Lawyers’ Assistance Program.
Brighton Hospital has programs to address alcohol and drug addiction. Programs include:

  • Detoxification services
  • Rehabilitation
  • Partial/Domiciliary Hospitalization
  • Intensive Outpatient Programs
  • Men’s and Women’s Halfway Houses for extended length of stay.

Hospital programs range between 14-30 day inpatient programs and extended aftercare programs can last up to six months. Some insurance companies only pay for detoxification services, leaving the patient without any type of education or aftercare. Studies have demonstrated that the longer a patient stays in treatment the better chance they have for continued sobriety. Additionally, Brighton Hospital has family programs and weekly on-going family support groups.

Brighton actively seeks contributions from law firms, entrepreneurs and other generous donors to assist our ability to provide these services to attorneys in need.
