Teen - Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Treatment, Rehabilitation Program

Our much needed adolescent drug rehab program is in operation. Non-medical use of prescription drugs among our youth increased from 5.4 percent in 2002 to 6.4 percent in 2006, due largely to an increase in the teen non-medical use of pain relievers. Statistics from the National Institute on Drug Abuse report that in 2006, close to 10 percent of teenage 12th graders reported taking Vicodin for non-medical use, and without a prescription.

Through regional partnership, the Brighton Hospital Adolescent Drug Rehab Program will enable teens and their families to get the substance abuse treatment they desperately need. The teen rehabilitation program includes individual, family and group therapy, access to family support groups, adolescent chemical dependency education, transportation, and aftercare.

We conduct adolescent chemical dependency assessments. Please contact our Customer Service representatives at 1-877-976-2371 to schedule. We also provide individual counseling sessions that are specialized in the unique needs of teen drug rehab.

Brighton Hospital Adolescent Substance Abuse Treatment Program

At Brighton Hospital we utilize multiple types of therapy for adolescents and their families, depending on individual and family needs. Each patient has a thorough assessment by a team of a nurse, physician, and a therapist to determine what level of care is appropriate.

If your adolescent is referred to the Brighton Hospital Adolescent Program, there are 3 phases of treatment:

Heroin addict survives coma and gets care at Brighton The video attempts to show teens that some of them may have inherited genes (DNA) that make them especially vulnerable to addiction.
Random urine drug screening is part of all phases

  • Adolescent attends 1-8 sessions of individual treatment with a master's or doctorate level therapist who specializes in substance abuse and co-occurring disorders treatment.
  • The treatment focuses on increasing motivation to address substance use, education about substance abuse, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • The therapy is designed to assist the adolescent in gaining insight into his or her behavior and to develop skills to remain abstinent from alcohol and other drugs.
  • Parent's observations and feedback is critical to the adolescents' success. Parents may be asked to participate in some sessions.

  • The adolescent enters the "Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program' (AIOP). AIOP is a combination of group therapy and didactic educational segments for 12 sessions.
  • AIOP sessions meet every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

  • The adolescent attends group therapy sessions once per week on Tuesdays from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
  • Focus is continued skill building to remain abstinent and addressing life issues.
  • At any point in the program, should your teen struggle to remain abstinent; our team will work with the patient and family to secure a referral to an adolescent inpatient treatment facility.

Parents, siblings and other family members are affected when substance abuse becomes an issue in the household. Family therapy is strongly encouraged throughout treatment with Brighton Hospitals' "Family and Friends" program. The program involves education about substance abuse, offers parent guidance and support and addresses the impact of substance abuse on other family members. Parents of adolescents attend a mandatory Parent Support and Education group during some of the adolescent AIOP sessions.

Parents and children over the age of 12 may attend educational lectures on Wednesday afternoons from 1 PM to 2:30 PM or 3 PM to 4:30 PM and on Saturday afternoons from 1 PM to 2:30 PM or 3 PM to 4:30 PM. The series consist of 8 lectures.

Chit Chat is a weekly discussion group that meets from 7:30 PM to 9 PM on Wednesdays. A Master's level therapist answers basic questions about chemical dependence offering support to family members.

The photo is entitled "Nat's Drug Mouth" and is a posed shot of Natalie Menestrina, daughter of Brighton Hospital's Medical Director of the Detoxification Unit, Dr. Mark Menestrina. Photo by her sister, Hillary Menestrina.

This photo is a part of a program produced by Dr. Menestrina to educate high school students and their parents about the dangers of addictions. Prescription Drugs, as illustrated by this photo, are increasingly abused by teens. More on Dr. Menestrina is available by clicking here. See his humorous video on this page as well. Dr. Menestrina is a frequently-quoted advocate for anti-drug programs in the schools and he lectures tirelessly on the subject of adolescent drug abuse and how little parents know about the drinking and drugging of their teenagers.

CLUB DRUGS

Typically used by teenagers and young adults at bars, clubs, concerts, and parties. The most common club drugs include Ecstasy (MDMA), GHB, Rohypnol, ketamine, methamphetamine, and acid (LSD).

Street Names:
XTC, X (MDMA); Special K, Vitamin K (ketamine); liquid ecstasy, soap (GHB); roofies (Rohypnol).

Effects:
Chronic use of MDMA may lead to changes in brain function. GHB abuse can cause coma and seizures. High doses of ketamine can cause delirium, amnesia, and other problems. Mixed with alcohol, Rohypnol can incapacitate users and cause amnesia.

Statistics and Trends:
The NIDA-funded 2007 Monitoring the Future Study showed that 0.7% of 8th graders, 0.7% of 10th graders, and 1.0% of 12th graders had abused Rohypnol; 0.7% of 8th graders, 0.6% of 10th graders, and 0.9% of 12th graders had abused GHB; and 1.0% of 8th graders, 0.8% of 10th graders, and 1.3% of 12th graders had abused ketamine at least once in the year prior to their being surveyed.
