The Henderson Men’s Halfway House: A Model of Better Transitional Living for Recovering Men

At times, a particular living environment may threaten a patient’s ability to maintain a clean and sober lifestyle after rehab. When this occurs, the patient may be best suited for an alternate, and more sober living situation to help solidify the gains made in rehab and recovery before returning to the previous environment. A transitional housing arrangement, therefore, is recommended for recovering men who do not a have a sober living environment to immediately return to.

Henderson Halfway House is a 16-bed men’s halfway house, also known as a men's rehab house or men's transitional housing, on the Brighton Hospital campus designed to meet the need of sober transitional living. In just one year, the Henderson Halfway House for Men has become a model for better transitional housing through innovative programming and staffing. The men’s halfway house provides the essential continuum of care on Brighton’s campus for rehab patients who have begun the road to recovery.

Location is the key to success when transitioning to rehab housing. Brighton’s patients travel only 50 to 100 yards to be at home in a professionally managed men’s halfway house, which offers an upbeat atmosphere where those recovering feel safe and comfortable with fellow patients and well as with staff members. While living in transitional housing, men have daily classes and individual counseling in a cooperative environment while working or engaging in volunteer service. And although patients are more independent during their halfway house stay, they also have individualized therapy, attend morning meditation and evening educational sessions, and participate in on-campus 12-step programs. The sober, transitional housing option provided by the men’s halfway house is among the many exciting opportunities to build recovery and fight relapse.
