Meet Our Drug and Alcohol Treatment Experts: John Hopper, M.D, FAAP, FACP, and Chief Medical Officer

Medical School: Wayne State University School of Medicine
Residency: University of North Carolina Hospitals
Certified by: American Board of Internal Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics and American Society of Addiction Medicine

Dr. Hopper has been on the staff of Brighton Hospital since 2004, and became Chief Medical Officer in 2005. He is Clinical Associate Professor of Internal medicine, Pediatrics and Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dr. Hopper serves on the Editorial Review Board of the “Journal of Opioid Management” and has published articles in several journals. He is listed in the “Guide to America’s Top Physicians,” has been named one of the “Best Doctors in America” for the past three years and is known nationally as an outstanding medical educator and mentor.

Because of the expertise and commitment of Dr. Hopper and his staff of drug and alcohol treatment experts, we are mending lives.  Our multidisciplinary team of drug and alcohol treatment experts know that chemical dependency is a disease – not a weakness.  We pledge to treat every patient with compassion, dignity and clinical excellence, because this is how you deserve to be treated.  We know this because many of our drug and alcohol treatment experts are also in recovery, or are adult children of alcoholics.  Approximately one-half of Brighton's employees came to us first for drug and alcohol treatment and rehabilitation, before joining our staff.  When it comes to recognizing drug and alcohol problems in his patients, "It's hard to fool me", says Dr. Menestrina, M.D., FASAM, Director of the Detox Center.  "I've been there, I can relate."

Every Brighton Hospital addiction treatment expert receives annual service excellence training.  This is reflected by patient satisfaction scores exceeding 90 percent.  Plus, having established America's first Fellowship in Addiction Medicine in a clinical setting, we lead the nation in the medical education for drug and alcohol treatment specialists. In addition, we help expand the understanding and knowledge of drug and alcohol treatment through regular rotations of nursing, medical and social work students.  These are some of our unique advantages in guiding our patients to recovery.  Welcome to hope.  Welcome to the experts at Brighton Hospital.
